In the mid-1960s, he moved to Kingston and became part of Trenchtown's vibrant music scene. Starting as the lead vocalist of The Soul Makers, he gradually developed his own unique sound. He became known as one of the innovative artists of his era, particularly for his style of blending African drum rhythms with reggae.

His debut album "Love Revolution" (1969) was released under Jamaica's Own Records. The album's lead single "Feel The Love" received extensive airplay on local radio stations. McKenzie was one of the pioneers who brought themes of social justice, equality, and love into his music before Bob Marley and other roots reggae artists.

McKenzie's music was known for its powerful social messages and dedication to African roots. He made significant contributions to reggae music with his distinctive vocal style and melancholic melodies. He passed away at the age of 53 in 2000 due to cancer.

Music historians remember him as one of the "hidden heroes of reggae," and he maintains a cult following today with his influence still evident on modern reggae artists.
